I'd argue most Barbarians are better off picking up fighter 1-4 then they are picking up levels 7-10 in their own class (zealots are a notable exception if they know they will reach level 14). I look at the dip simply as the the character's natural progression as a more competent warrior, not something that represents a divergence into completely different skills.
