The Garden was established in 1978 after Dan and Pauline Lutkenhouse purchased the secluded and beautiful property in Onomea (which means ‘good feeling’) without knowing exactly what they wanted to do with it. Lutkenhouse quickly decided to establish a botanical garden, and preserve the valley and its beauty forever.
Zero of the companies are still active while the remaining two are now listed as inactive. Pauline Campanelli (1943–2001) was an American artist who specialized in photorealistic still lifes.Though her work did not often attract prestigious galleries or museums, only Andrew Wyeth sold more paintings while living than she did.
The garden was created through the untiring efforts of one man, Dan Lutkenhouse Sr., who discovered Onomea Valley while on vacation with his wife Pauline in 1977. Mr. Lutkenhouse purchased the 17-acre property without knowing what he would do with it. “When my father first saw Onomea Valley, it was an overgrown and virtually impenetrable jungle.
Dan and his wife Pauline opened the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden to the public in 1984. The botanical garden boasts approximately 2,500 diverse species of plants—some of them only living in conservation space, otherwise they’d be extinct. The Lutkenhousesʻ desire to preserve rare tropical plants extended to the entire Onomea Bay area. On June 8, 1977, newly-married Dan and Pauline Lutkenhouse visited the Big Island of Hawaii for the first time.
